What if this is as good as it gets?

woman smilingWe often end up wanting more, getting the next fix in life, looking to the next plan for the next few days, and if we are constantly working out our next move we lose sight of ourselves as we are here and now.

This begs the question, how are you really doing right now? and are you content with your life as it is right now. Inside all of us as the Buddha says is an endless craving for more. More what you say, more anything.

If you can get to a point of satisfaction about where you are right now, you may get a glimpse of how to control craving, for craving in all its forms leads directly to a  state of mind and emotional response, which is the make- break point of stress.

In her book “Not about being good” Subhadra Mati says:

“Although every single thing that happens to you can’t be said to be the result of your actions, at the same time you will tend to create the world that you live in. I am fond of telling one of Aesop’s (an ancient Greek storyteller) fables to illustrate this”.

The story goes that there was a man sitting at a crossroads. Presently a grumpy looking traveller comes by and says to the man, “Here you what’s the next village like, are the people honest and friendly?” Instead of answering directly, he says. “Tell me about the village you’ve come from. Were the people honest and friendly”.

“Not a bit of it replied the traveller, they were thieves, liars and lazy good for nothings”. Oh says the man I’m sorry to have to tell you that you will find the next village no better” Presently another traveller comes along smiling and says, “Kind Sir can you tell me about the people in the next village/”

Again he asked him, ” how was the last village”, to which he replied, “In the last village everyone was friendly, industrious and hard working.”

And the man replied “I’m glad to be able to tell you that you will find the next village exactly the same”

The moral of the story is that both travellers came from the same village but experienced it in different ways.

You could even say that when we draw particular people and experiences towards us, a sort of affinity operates.”

Tips:

1) take a moment to find a person in your life with a sunny disposition and see how life goes for them. Then try to be like that for 24 hours. Keep in mind that we may be totally different people at work and at home and that we may behave and respond differently too.

2) Sit down and with a pen and paper write down 5 things you are currently doing that you are proud of and that you created.
