Metabolism and Your Weight

jogging in wwodsMetabolism is from Greek and French and means “to change.”

Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical reactions taking place in the body.

Basal, (foundation or base) Metabolism is the basic amount of chemicals needed while the body is at rest. It is the number of energy units the body needs for lying still and breathing.

In medical terms, metabolism means the chemical changes that take place in a cell or organism. These chemical changes help the cells and organs and muscles to make energy which is needed for growth and energy and health.

So metabolism creates the ability of the body to exist, to work at doing something.

After the age of 30, metabolism starts to slow down. Adults experience about 3% drop in metabolism every 5 to 7 years. This is due to increased body fat which occurs with age.

Dr, Eva, the health Doctor, said on the radio news talk show the other week that we should keep the same attention to our weight as we do to our finances, in other words, we should check it regularly to make sure all is going well.

During puberty and teenage years, our growth hormone helps us to grow in spurts that cause us to use more energy and our metabolism is faster as a result. As we age and particularly after 30 our metabolism slows down. This can result in an increase in weight, which after the mid-40s is more difficult to get rid of. It can become a vicious circle.

And so the idea of exercise then becomes something to be avoided at all costs.

You need to break this agreement and come to Get Back Health Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic this week and get your body adjusted so that you feel energized and ready for exercise and help your body to stay healthy.

John Keane, Spinologist
