Usually we are stressed because of being suddenly let down by a friend or work colleague, or we get some emergency in life, or we get bad news or unrealistic expectations, financial worries, feeling not quite yourself or nobody’s got your back.
Once the stress occurs it triggers the fight or flight response, releasing hormones (body chemicals) like cortisol, and adrenaline, which cause physical changes to prepare for a perceived threat such as faster breathing, increased heart rate and higher blood pressure. While this response is OK for short term emergencies, chronic stress can lead to long term health problems such as digestive issues, muscle tension, sleep problems, a weakened immune system and a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Many of us have a fair idea of this already and one would be forgiven for asking why then we often ignore the signs.
Well, some of the problem has to do with the very way we cope with stress and or our rewards for effort done.
Take the coffee and Danish pastry or cream bun.
Just deciding to only have the coffee and leave the Danish would be a big step to a happier body.
Tips:
1. Decide to not take those free sweets offered in shops etc, cut down on your sugar intake at least until Xmas eve.
2. Either have the coffee or the Danish but not both as it’s a deadly combination for your body and adds to the stress.
3. Realise that eating any kind of sugar product leads to the addictive desire to want more and more. So, make an executive decision.
4. Eat fruit and drink water 5 mins before your break. Yes, I know you should eat fruit 20 mins before or after other foods but we are handling cravings here.
5. Come to the Get Back Health Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic this week and get your nervous system realigned so you are more able to say no to sugar.
