Energy Conversion: The Human Miracle

Healthy foodsThe basic converter of energy for use by man was and to some degree still is the human body. Energy is delivered to the body by the foods we eat and the liquids we drink. Foods rich in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and vegetables offer sustained energy release, while proteins and healthy fats offer long-lasting fuel and overall energy balance.

Notice there is no mention of processed foods or sugar above.

Before 1700, the only means of energy use was the human body.

Steam power was first invented about 1700 in order to get water out of coal mines.

Then James Watt increased its efficiency in 1781 when he adapted a steam engine to drive factory machinery, and the Industrial Revolution exploded. It would be the mid-twentieth century before steam energy was replaced by diesel and electric power.

But for you, the average human being, you continue to convert the sun’s power—convert light and heat in the form of plants, fruit, fish, and meat.

Essentially, foods contain vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and nutrients are natural chemicals that the body needs for proper function, supporting everything from energy production and immune function to cell growth and repair.

So it makes perfect sense to do a little research into the sources of your fish (is it farmed and if so, what are they fed on?), your meat (is it organic—cows, sheep, calves, and chickens have feelings too), and your fruit and vegetables (are they local or did they come on a ship where they may have been sprayed to keep them “fresh”)?

The choice is yours; your body is yours. When we are young it seems we can eat anything and have no ill effects, but as we get older—say after 30 years—the effects can be felt. And the problem is, old habits persist.

Tips:

1. Do a little research next time you are shopping. Look at where the food is coming from and ask for data to make better choices. The fresher and more organic the food, the more vitamins and minerals it contains.

2. If you find yourself drinking too much coffee or tea, then drink a glass of water—this can nullify the desire.

3. If your energy is down, get some help from a nutritionist or a health food shop; sometimes a small change can make all the difference.

4. Come to the Get Back Health Chiropractic and Wellness Clinic this week and get your nervous system realigned—this will help with all aspects of energy in the body.
