Action not motion is what gets things done

procrastinationOur attention can get bogged down with unfinished actions at home or in work or in our personal life.

Every time you start a small project such as cleaning a shelf or fixing the garden or doing the filing and you don’t complete the task your attention stays on it to some small degree.

As these items build up one can get more and more dispersed.

In his Book, Atomic habits, James Clear says:

“Motion (thinking about doing, planning, learning) makes you feel like you’re getting things done.

But in reality you’ve just preparing to get something done. When preparation becomes a form of procrastination (the action of delaying or postponing something), you need to change something. You don’t want to merely be planning; you want to be practicing. If you want to master a new habit, the key is to start with repetition, not perfection.”

And when you examine it closely the action of completing all those unfinished actions is an action and what James Clear says: get on with it, do it, do it badly, but start in some way or fashion to complete all those unfinished actions that are bringing you down.

The result will be increased wellbeing, increased energy, becoming more outward looking and able to set new goals.

Tips:

  1. Let’s procrastinate for 5 minutes only, and write down a list of unfinished actions
  2. Start to complete some of these immediately and decide to put aside some time to continue doing the list on a regular basis.
  3. When doing actions in the future ask yourself if I have enough time to complete this and if not break down the action into steps, some to be completed later.
  4. Come to the Get Back Health Chiropractic clinic and get your spine adjusted. When your Nervous System is aligned your ability to focus on action increases.
